Guide VERON des Champagnes 2017
(around 18 euros per
bottle)
Sober and luxurious presentation, well made.
Aspect:
Golden,
dense and bright.
Particularly
fine bubbles.
Elegant
bead of scattered bubbles, persistent on the periphery of the flute.
Nose:
Generous,
it immediately takes us into a heady aromatic whirl.
Radiant
maturity, with its gourmet scents of caramel and pastries, barely spicy, result
of 7 years of ageing on laths, with patient autolysis of the prise de mousse yeasts.
The
majority of Pinot Noir (90%), harvested by hand in the Grand Cru of Aÿ is then
revealed, with its aromas of candied red and black fruits (cherry, strawberry
and blackberry).
Later,
the Chardonnay (10%) from the terroir of
Bassu is unveiled, full of finesse, with hints of peach, hazelnut, apricot and
raisin.
Palate:
Pure
opening, with citrus fruits, definitely due to the selection of the best juices
during the pressing of the grapes (cuvée),
supported by a vibrant minerality.
The
mouth then becomes soft, warm and comforting, perhaps thanks to the judicious
fulfillment of the malolactic fermentation of the base wines, coupled with a
sensual effervescence.
Tasty
finish, subtly spicy.
Impressive
length on the palate.
Laurent
and René Roger, its producer, were able to compose the inspired blending of
vintages, with 50% from 2007, completed by 3 previous years, to offer us a
touching Cuvée Althaea.
To taste during
your festive meals, to accompany an entire stuffed capon, for example.
Settled in Aÿ, in the heart of Champagne,
the Champagne House René Roger currently directed by René and Laurent Roger,
has been perpetuating the champenois traditions for more than four centuries. A
vineyard of around 8 hectares mainly planted in Aÿ, but also in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ,
Mutigny, Mardeuil and Bassy, composed of 75% of Pinot Noir and 25% of
Chardonnay, give birth to around 33,000 bottles of high-level Champagnes each
year, marketed under the brand René Roger created in 1995.
